8th Grade Class News
Ever asked, "what did you do at school today"?
Ever heard, "nothing"?
Want the real answer?
8th grade English and Literature:
We are working on a short story unit. Students are learning the elements of short stories including, plot development, characterization, setting, point of view and dialogue. We will apply what we have learned to several short stories that we will read in class.
We will finish our short story unit by writing their own origianl short story piece. Students will develop their own characters and plot line. All short stories will be typed and placed in each student's writing portfolio which they will receive at the end of the year.
Students are also completeing weekly vocabulary skills. The words that we are learning this year are words commonly seen on SAT tests. I believe it is never too early to start preparing for the ACT and SAT. The students are required to learn how to spell the word, know its definition and be able to use it correctly in a sentence. Be sure you ask your child to see their words on Mondays.
7th grade English:
We are working on a persuasive writing unit. Students are learning the elements of how to persuade someone using a thesis statement, supporting points and a strong conclusion. They will be writing a persuasive speech in which they will choose one topic from several worldly and social issues. Once they chose a topic they will form an opinion statement and develop three support points. All students will be required to deliver their speech to the entire class. I am a big believer in the fact the more public speaking we do the easier it becomes.
Students are also completing weekly vocabularly skills. The words we are learning are on grade level. I try to choose words that they would commonly see in the books they are reading. The students are required to learn how to spell the word, know its definition and be able to use it correctly in a sentence. Be sure to ask your child to see their words on Mondays.
